Many of the Team Northern Ireland athletes had to make an herculean effort just to make it to the start line in Leeds. Storm Claudia battered the area with torrential rain and high winds. This led to numerous plane and train cancellations with athletes having to make alternative arrangements if they wanted to remain part of this prestigious annual event.
The rain continued on race day which made the very challenging course extremely muddy and slippery under foot.
Northern Ireland’s Matt Shields won individual Gold in the M70 category with Gerry O’Doherty taking Silver.
There were also three team medals:
M65 Bronze: Norman Mawhinney, David Clarke, Laurence Johnston, Sean McAuley
M70 Gold: Matt Shields, Gerry O’Doherty, Terry Eakin, Ray Curran
W55 Bronze: Shileen O’Kane, Fiona Prue, Anne-Marie Carr, Debbie Matchett
Next year the event will be hosted by Irish Masters in Dublin.
